Dead Parrots Society Are The CIT 2010-2011 National Champs!!!

Dead Parrots Society with the CIT 2010-2011 National Trophy Cup.

In just their second year in the CIT, Dead Parrots Society from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA (about 300 miles north of Seattle), are the new College Improv Tournament's National Champions! The 5 person team, composed of 3 women and 2 men, won both their 3 team playoff match by a score of 11 to 1 to 0 and they won their 4 team title match by a score of 8 to 4 to 2 to 0. Upon hearing the news of their victory, all 5 members (4 seniors and 1 sophomore) began to cry tears of joy.

1st place Dead Parrots Society improvising in the CIT Nationals title match.

After winning their first match, Dead Parrots Society could have played it safely, but instead in the title match they performed a different form than what they played in their playoff match. To top it off, this form was also a form of their own making. To do this in the title match was the artistic choice rather than the competitive choice and it paid off for them.

2nd place Improv Mafia improvising in the CIT Nationals title match.

The is the first time in CIT's 4 year history that a team outside the state of Illinois won the national title. 2nd place went to the physically energetic and playful Improv Mafia from Illinois State University. 3rd place went to the Cinderella story of this year's CIT, Droppin' $cience from Columbia College Chicago. 4th place went to the cerebral and confident 4 person team Seriously Bent from Suffolk University.

3rd place Droppin' $cience improvising in the CIT Nationals title match.

All 12 teams in the CIT Nationals had great sets as every team brought it hard and showed the best of what their team was about. The two Chicago based teams, Cosby Sweaters from DePaul University and Droppin' Science both got standing ovations in their playoff matches. That all the teams played so well made this the best CIT Nationals so far in its history.

All the on-air talent, the co-anchors, the sideline reporters, the referee, and the musical director were all alumni of the CIT, as were some of the behind the scenes crew and staff.

CIT Nationals' On-Air Crew: (L to R) Mike Norris, Annie Rix, Dan Lippert, Caleb George, Keith Habersberger, Alex Young, Matt Herzau

The teams playing so well also made for some very difficult voting choices for the 12-14 judges who watched in person or the webcasts. Half the judges were in Chicago and the other half were all over the country watching online. After each match, the judges would either hand in or text in their votes to the CIT production assistants who would bring the votes to CIT Producer Jonathan Pitts who was onstage with the tally board.

Besides having full houses for all 5 matches, this year's CIT Nationals were also webcast and were seen by over 4,000 people over the course of the day. The videos from all 5 webcasts have been posted on-line in their entirety on U-Stream. To watch any of those 5 match videos, please click: U-Stream

CIT's official promo video for the CIT National Championship

This is it. This is for all the marbles. After 4 months of competing and performing, it all comes down to this Saturday for the one team to become the 2010-2011 National Champions. Even now, across the country, 10 teams are getting ready to travel to Chicago on Thursday and Friday to be here to represent their regions in this celebration of college improv comedy.

CIT Producer Jonathan Pitts says, "we're so excited for this weekend's Nationals. This is the strongest field of teams we've ever had at the Nationals and I believe they're all going to do a great job showing everyone just how great the cream of the crop of college improv can be!"

He added, "We've got 13 judges for each of the playoff matches and 15 judges for the title match, half of the judges will be here in Chicago and the other half will be watching on-line and then texting in their votes. We're excited that this year's judges panel of professional improv artists will truly represent a national perspective, just like the teams and this tournament."

Chicago Regional Finals: Cosby Sweaters, DePaul University; Droppin' $cience, Columbia College Chicago; Titanic Players, Northwestern University; Wheaton Improv, Wheaton College

Scoring 2nd place was The Cosby Sweaters from DePaul University. They performed a musical, making their team only one of two to do improv musicals in the CIT Tournament. They are still in contention for the final Wild Card slot for the CIT Nationals. They are up against DeBono from the University of Illinois, who is the other team that did an improv musical in the CIT tournament. The CIT Nationals judges will make the final selection this week.

CIT's Chicago Regional, is the last of this year's 10 CIT regionals. This Saturday and Sunday, 10 teams from the Chicago area will compete for local bragging rights as well as an automatic berth into the CIT Nationals on 2/26/11.

Even though the Titanic Players from Northwestern University are the defending champs, due to the Titanic Players unique way of being a team (each team stays together freshmen-senior years as one ensemble), it also means that each year they submit a new team and so, anyone can win this year's regional battle.

The Chicago Regional preliminary matches are this Saturday, 12pm, 2pm, & 4pm. The Finals are this Sunday, 8pm (after the Bears/Packers game is over). All the matches take place at ComedySportz Chicago, 949 W. Belmont Ave.

3 Super Regional Weekends = 9 Regionals & 9 Title Winners

With 3 super regional weekends now over, there are now 9 regional champs. Of those 9 title winners, 2 teams have won regional titles before and 7 teams won their first ever regional title. CIT Producer Jonathan Pitts says, "This is a sign of the over-all health and growth of both the tournament and college improv. It's great to see so many new teams win regional titles. A lot of teams that came in 2nd place for their first time too. We also noticed that a lot of teams that struggled last year did better or great this year."

He continues, "This year was the first year we added Wild Card teams to each regional finals. Of those, 2 Wild Card teams finished in the top two places, and its been great to give 9 teams an opportunity to perform a second show in the regional finals."

CIT Assistant Producer Isla Axelrod said, "With teams from Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Texas, and Washington, scheduled to be in the CIT Nationals, it really is quite an impressive spread of teams representing the whole country."

CIT Assistant Producer Keith Habersberger also said, "It's also been interesting to see that until Captain Soldier from NYU won the East Regional, all the other regionals from this year were won by teams from smaller universities, state schools or colleges. I'm not quite sure why that is but maybe building and developing team community is easier in a smaller university."

Update: 11/22/10
CIT Regional Winners from 11/20

East Regional Champs: Captain Soldier, New York University

In the final weekend of CIT's 3 super regional weekends, the results are similar to the first weekend, with 1 team reclaiming its regional title and 2 teams getting their first ever regional titles. In the East Regional, New York University's newer improv team Captain Soldier came from the dark horse position to win the title. This is their first ever title.

New England Regional Champs: Seriously Bent, Suffolk University

In the New England Regional, perennial powerhouse Seriously Bent from Suffolk University won it's third consecutive title. CIT Assistant Producer keith Habersberger said that this was the strongest Seriously Bent team he'd ever seen in their 4 years playing in the CIT.

South Regional Champs: University of Georgia-Athens

In the South Regional, last year's 1st and 2nd place teams switched places as this year's title was won by Improv Athens from University of Georgia-Athens. It was a super exciting finish, as they won over the South Regional defending champs, University of Florida's Theatre Strike Force, by a judges' score of 4-3.

East Regional Finals: Captain Soldier, New York University; Fowl Play, Temple University; Improv 101, LaSalle University; Rubber Chickens, University of Delaware; Whistling Shrimp, Cornell University

As with the previous three super regional weekends, the three teams that finished in 2nd place are all candidates for the two Wild Card slots. Finishing in 2nd place was Rubber Chickens from the University of Delaware in the East Regional; Cheap Sox from Tufts University in the New England Regional; and former South Regional champs Theatre Strike Force from University of Florida.

New England Regional Finals: Cheap Sox, Tufts University; Purple Crayon, Yale University; Seriously Bent, Suffolk University

Additionally, the CIT producers made the decision that since the East Regional had 16 teams playing in the regional, that the East Regional's 3rd place team would also be a candidate for one of the two Wild Card slots. The East Regional's 3rd place team is Whistling Shrimp from Cornell University.

South Regional Finals: Improv Athens, University of Georgia-Athens; KISS, Kennesaw State University; Rathskellar, Emory University; Theatre Strike Force, University of Florida

For winning their regional titles, all 3 regional winning teams automatically won a slot to appear in the CIT Nationals in Chicago on February 26, 2011.

Update: 11/18/10
Last Weekend of 3 Regionals

The CIT 2010 speeds into its third and final weekend of doing 3 super-regionals at the same time across the country, as 33 teams will compete on Saturday. This weekend's regionals include East Regional in Philadelphia, New England Regional in Boston, and South Regional in Atlanta. There will be live updates of all match results posted through out Saturday on CIT's Facebook page.

Update: 11/15/10
CIT Regional Winners From 11/13

Northwest Regional Champs: The Dead Parrots Society, Western Washington University

On Saturday, there were 3 regionals and now there are 3 new regional champs, as The Dead Parrots Society from Western Washington University won the Northwest Regional; Unusual Suspects from University of Minnesota-Morris won the Upper Midwest Regional; and Barren Mind Improv from Arizona State University won the West Regional. This was the first regional victory for all three teams.

West Regional Champs: Barren Mind Improv, Arizona State University

Last year Dead Parrot came in 2nd place in the Northwest Regional, and neither Barren Mind Improv or Unusual Suspects won their preliminary matches in the West or Midwest Regionals. Now, all 3 teams are champs and have the regional titles to prove it. They will all play in the CIT Nationals on Saturday, February 26 in Chicago.

Upper Midwest Regional Champs: Unusual Suspects, University of Minnesota-Morris

There are also 3 teams that came in 2nd place and those 3 teams are now eligible to be candidates for the two Wild Card slots at the CIT Nationals. The 2nd place teams were Varsity Nordic from Whitman College in the Northwest Regional; Paperback Rhino from University of Iowa in the Upper Midwest Regional; and Live Nude People from University of California-Irvine in the West Regional.

Northwestern Regional Finals: The Collective, University of Washington-Seattle; The Dead Parrots Society, Western Washington University; Varsity Nordic, Whitman College

After two weekends of regional play, two trends have stood out to the CIT producers. The first is that all the regionals have been won by teams from small or smaller colleges and universities. The other is that with the exception of The Improv Mafia return to their previous winning ways, most of the 1st place and 2nd place teams are all reaching new levels of CIT success for themselves, as team that haven't won preliminary matches before are now winning them this year and winning regional titles or are up for Wild Card consideration.

West Regional Finals: Barren Mind Improv, Arizona State University; Live Nude People, University of California-Irvine; National Comedy Theatre, San Diego

CIT producer Jonathan Pitts says, "It's great to see these teams growing artistically from year to year and we're grateful to hear from so many teams that its the CIT that's helping them getting better. All the teams are having fun along the way too and that's what really counts."

Upper Midwest Regional Finals: Paperback Rhinos, University of Iowa; Understudies, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Unusual Suspects, University of Minnesota-Morris

Update: 11/12/10

CIT 2007 Player Cast In Comedy Central Show

A big congrats is in order for Britt Lower, one of three former cast members of The Titanic Players' Old Tom Jar from Northwestern University, which won the CIT 2007 National Championship. Britt has been cast for a recurring role on Comedy Central's new show Big Lake, which is directed and written by Will Farrell and Chicago improv alum Adam McKay. Word is that Britt only had a partial reel, so in order to send in a full reel she included video from her performances in CIT 2007. They liked what they saw and gave her the audition. She nailed it and got the gig. At first, she was only suppose to have a few lines in one show, but they liked her so much she got bumped up into the recurring role. Starring in the show are SNL vets Chris Parnell and Chicago improv alum Horatio Sanz.
