Artistic Director Statement for CIF 2011

CIF's Artistic Director Jet Eveleth released this statement about CIF 2011:

The Chicago Improv Festival is proud to welcome shows from all over the US and the world that continue to discover improv's edge. CIF looks forward to the improv inspired scripted show Delicious Moments and to works that incorporate body painting and modern dance like Skinesthesia and The Movement. Local groups find inspiration in new forms like in Improv Jane Austen and Comedy Queue, where Youtube clips inspire improvised scenes.

We are also looking forward to seeing our international friends like ImproTop, from Mexico City, who blew audiences away last year combining ancient rituals with clown inspired narrative. But do not fear the Chicago "classics" will also be represented with great groups like the 4 Horsemen, Jessica, Chicagoland and 3033. Thank you to everyone who applied, it is a beautiful reminder how many artists are out in the world. See you at CIF!

CIF 2011 Dedicated To Joyce Sloane & Mary Scruggs

Joyce Sloane

Last night, Chicago theatre legend Joyce Sloane passed away. She was The Second City's Producer Emeritus and with The Second City for 50 of its 51 years. She was the heart of Second City and the godmother to Chicago theatre. She was on the board of numerous Chicago area theatres, most notably Victory Gardens Theatre and The Chicago Academy for the Arts high school. She was a CIF Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, a former CIF board member, and a great friend to and supporter of CIF. At the time of her passing, she was on CIF's Advisory Board. This year's CIF will be dedicated in her honor. Thanks Joyce, for everything you did, for everyone, for 50+ years! You were the best!!

For more information about Joyce Sloane, please click: Second City Bio
To read the Chicago Tribune's article about her life, please click: Tribune

Mary Scruggs

This year's CIF is also dedicated to Second City Training Center Writing Program Head Mary Scruggs who passed away suddenly on January 11.

CIF's Artistic Director Jet Eveleth: Mary started the improv for writers class at Second City and we were creating a class called "Long-form Into Sketch" this year together. She was an influence on The Reckoning and countless of other performers in a very grassroots way. As a teacher and artist she had a direct influence on everyone she met and the world of chicago improv. My life in improv wouldn't be the same without her.

Artistic Director's Submission Statement

This statement about the upcoming artistic selection process and theme for CIF 2011 is from CIF's Artistic Director, Jet Eveleth:

This year the Chicago Improv Festival is encouraging submissions that find "improv's edge." This could mean anything from pushing into new boundaries in the realm of form, style, content and/or ensemble. Shows like "Family Tree Boat House Accident", "Improvised Shakespeare Co.", and "Reset List" are great examples of ensembles that have truly risked and therefore taken improv to new places.

Thinking outside the box may start with interdisciplinary elements, incorporating new mediums such as music, dance, clown, literary and playwright styles, poetry, costumes, lights, props, audience participation, non-linear time travel and expand from there. CIF is looking for shows that are not only experimental but have put in the time and work to see the project evolve.

Ideally ensembles will work with experienced coaches and directors and have had a run to create a consistent product. This year's theme is aimed to create artistic diversity for the festival and encourage the community to explore improv's edge.

Workshop Descriptions:
Fundamentals of JTS Brown / JTS Brown is a 12-year-old form created by some of the best long form players of i.O. Chicago's history. It's patchwork style combines a pallet of moves designed to highlight solid scene work within its highly transformational and almost dream like string of characters, relationships and realities. It elevates long form to a higher level of theatricality by combining sophisticated scene work with playful and experimental group work. JTS produces an exciting hybrid of fresh comedy and downright good theater.

CHICAGO IMPROV FESTIVAL 2011: "EXPLORING IMPROV'S EDGE" ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE, APRIL 25-MAY 1

CHICAGO - The 14th annual Chicago Improv Festival announces the schedule for its 2011 Festival Exploring Improv's Edge', April 25-May 1. Improv's Edge will explore the art form of improv, but will also go beyond to explore the combination of the art, artists, venues and other unique aspects. With more than 90 ensembles from eight countries and 32 different cities, the Festival will take place at 12 different venues around the city and suburbs. Tickets are $5-15 and are available via the venue. For more information about the Chicago Improv Festival, please visit www.chicagoimprovfestival.org.

"The 2011 Chicago Improv Festival is excited to welcome shows from all over the United States and around the world to explore the theme of 'Exploring Improv's Edge'," says Artistic Director Jet Eveleth. "Delicious Moments embodies the theme with an improv inspired scripted show, while Skinesthesia and The Moment incorporate body paint and modern dance into its performance. Audiences will also be thrilled by Improvising Jane Austen and Comedy Queue, who use YouTube clips as inspiration for improvised scenes."

Of course, the Chicago Improv Festival will feature Chicago favorite ensembles including 4 Horsemen made-up of local comedy legends Joe Bill, Bob Fisher, Mick Napier and Mark Sutton; Jessica, the popular long-form team that takes risks with alternative forms and character work; Chicagoland the super-group made up of [Noah Gregoropolous, Paul Grondy, T.J. Jagodowski, Bill Bungeroth, & Alex Fendrich]; and 3033, a veteran long-form improvised team who has perfected their craft over the last decade.

The Chicago Improv Festival will also hold special events during the Festival, including The Improv Forum on Friday, April 29 from 12-2:30 p.m. at The Playground (3209 N. Halsted). The event, which is free to the public, will feature a discussion by Margaret Hicks about her new novel, Chicago Comedy: A Fairly Serious History, followed by the final preview of Mike Fly's documentary, "David Shepherd: A Lifetime of Improvisational Theatre" at 12:30 p.m. and a performance by The Reckoning at 2:00 p.m.

The ComedySportz lobby (929 W. Belmont Ave.) will also house The Digital Improv Project, an interactive computer improv instillation on Friday April 29 and Saturday 30, which is free to the public. This multi-year research initiative led by Dr. Brian Magerko, head of the Adaptive Digital Media Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was created to better understand the nature of human creativity, particularly in regards to human storytelling and making.
